I made this skirt by taking a pattern from a cord skirt that I love to wear… It buttons down the front and is unlined so I knew it would be a good option to make a copy.
In making a pattern from clothing there are a few ways to approach it – it can be cut apart and used as a pattern Or it can be traced without damaging the original. I want to keep wearing this skirt, so tracing it is…
I pinned the skirt onto brown paper and added the seam allowance for the button placket:
I took some photos and a video as I was tracing it and have it saved on Instagram.. The link below should bring you straight to it… (If I’ve done this right!)
I cut the new skirt from a lovely grey suiting fabric with a pink stripe, which I got from the recent fabric swap.
I underlined each skirt piece with some thin habotai lining, before folding and sewing the facings.
I had some pink buttons that were the perfect size and made the buttonholes using the embroidery unit on my Pfaff machine. I took alot of photos of that process and will post about it soon.
In the meantime since the pattern worked out – I have cut and almost finished a 2nd version.
Nicely done!!! I love the diagonal pockets; that is a great feature.
Thanks! I forgot to mention that the lining is cut on-grain and interfaced to stop the pockets from stretching out!
Brilliant. Such a little detail, but so helpful.
Great job. Agree about the fabulous diagonal pockets. The finishing is great, too – thanks for showing the details. One thing I’ve always wondered about when tracing off an existing garment is the best way to lay out the fabric. Off to check out your video!
I picked a simple skirt to trace, since there are no front darts😁. Hope the other picture made sense! My copy method varies depending on how complex the original was!
Chris, you know, I am geometrically challenged so I always worry about getting the dart right when I try to trace. I’ve seen a few methods. To be honest, I didn’t quite understand what you did with your tracing tool. Did it actually fully puncture the garment seam?
With darts I usually trace up to the dart then mark and fold the dart and then carry on tracing.
And yes that tool has really sharp points.. So not for delicate fabrics😆! You could also use a pin.
PS The photos and videos were great though! Loved it!
Awesome! That put a smile on my face, it’s so bright and cheerful
Thank you, I don’t normally buy or wear pink (the top was a gift) but I like it combined with the grey 🙂
